Шурик, любопытной варваре - нос оторвали. Я совсем не обязан отчитываться перед каждым чудиком. Это-то вы понимаетеShoorick писал(а):И сколько дней в году там присутствуете?
I looked at all these posts and have to say to the people who think SPOT or anything other then a PLB using
the COSPAS SARSAT network is the way to go for having your life saved is TOTALLY MISLEAD.
Those other toys are certainly neat I must say. Awesome for communicating other details, providing where you have been tracks,
bla bla bla. That stuff is cool for sure. But if your life is on the line you do not want to rely on those toys, nor their associated for profit
satellite networks. I have been to Globalstar Tech seminars as a Marine Electronics Tech. There pretty scary or at least they were. I've spent hours and hours traveling to vessels who specified they wanted Globalstar only to get there and find out there was nothing wrong with the equiptment, and their techs tell me to try make a call at such and such time and then it should work due to sat outages.
You probably will not find much info about any problems they are experiencing with sat outages online. We always had to dig to get this info.
Iridium is probably a little bit better. In that being said that is just the minor reasons I would not use the spots or equiv to rely on your life being saved only. I am not saying they are not worth getting because they are cool as heck, and 99.9% of the time they would be more useful to use due to there other functions. But for LIFESAVING no. What happens if your card was declined? Could it cost you your life? (just a side note)
COSPAS SARSAT EPIRB/PLB or older similar devices has saved over 33,000 lives. The 406 network works from both leo and geo sats. ( the ones close to earth that move and the ones farther from earth that don't move in relation to the earth. The PLBS all have GPS these days so the fact that a GEO sat can not caluculate your position using doppler shift is not a concern. But a GEO wont work in Polar regions. So there is the LEO.
THE PLB's are not only 406 but have a 121.5 homing signal. This allows people to find you with a antenna when they get closer to you.
And here is a cut and paste from cospas sarsat:
What other agencies are involved with Cospas-Sarsat in the United States?
Besides NOAA, the partners in the national Cospas-Sarsat program are the U.S. Air Force, responsible for inland search and rescue coordination, the U.S. Coast Guard, responsible for maritime search and rescue and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), responsible for research and development.
I think those would be the people I would want saving my Life if I needed to send the distress.
All ships must have a 406 epirb as per IMO regulations. A ship could have 20 globalstar sat communication devices but there not leaving a US port without a 406 epirb. (then can have an inmarsat epirb but no one does)
WHEN IT COMES TO BUYING A UNIT FOR SAVING YOUR LIFE YOU BUY A PLB! It's not really a debate in the industry. All the government agencies (coast guard pilot's, USDA, etc etc use PLBs on 406 and 121.5.
If you want all the bells and whistles and want to text etc and really are not getting it to save your life, then you can get a Spot or similar.
Seems like for the cost of subscription you could buy 3 PLBs by the time the battery would expire on one of them.
Sorry the message is poorly written but I don't really have the time to make it a pleasure to read.
In addition: If you get saved by use of a ACR plb, you get a free one!! Whoo Hoo. In all my years in the Business I have never had a customer walk thru the door stating his 406 epirb or plb did not work!!!
OK have fun be safe and don't let someone tell you a SPOT is the way to go for SAVING YOUR FRIGGIN LIFE.
